Mónica González talks about functional biodiversity as a tool for IPM

Mónica González, our colleague from Fundación Cajamar, gives a talk on functional biodiversity as a tool for IPM in the International Meeting PHYTOMA-SPAIN

Organized by PHYTOMA Spain, the International Meeting on “Challenges of Crop Protection: Legal framework and Climate Change” was held in Valencia last 13-14 June.
Mónica González, member of SmartIPM project team, participated in this meeting with the talk “Biodiversity and biological control against climate change effects on intensive agriculture of the Mediterranean coastline”. She presented the need of introducing functional biodiversity in the surroundings of the greenhouses as a new tool of pest management, thus adapting this agricultural system to the negative effects of global warming. Indeed, it is foreseen an increase of pests and diseases, and consequently the need for their control and management strategies and tools will increase. For instance, the establishment of hedgerows with native vegetation between greenhouses is a new complementary tool for augmentative biological control of pests in integrated pest management strategies.
